How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 1997-1998 Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Montana Serpentine Belt Tensioner Replacement

Fits years: 1997, 1998

All Chevrolet Venture for sale Tools required:

  • 3/8 Drive ratchet handle

  • 15mm socket/ratchet


Step 1: Open the vehicle's hood.

Step 2: Locate the belt routing diagram located near the radiator, near the belt pulleys, or in the owner's manual.

Step 3: Using the 3/8 drive ratchet, insert the square peg into the belt tensioner and turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE to release the tension on the serpentine belt. You can now remove the belt from the vehicle.

Step 4: Loosen and remove the 15mm mounting bolt (1) that secures the tensioner to the engine.


The mounting bolt is located in the CENTER of the tensioner.

Step 5: You can now remove the belt tensioner from the vehicle.

Step 6: Mount the new belt tensioner by tightening the 15mm mounting bolt (1). Be sure to use the guiding tab on the tensioner to ensure proper placement!

Step 7: Using the diagram we found in Step 2, route the serpentine belt around the proper pulleys. Once in place, use the 3/8 drive ratchet handle to turn the tensioner CLOCKWISE, tightening the belt.


NOTE: The belt should be taut, but not overly tight or stretched!
