Tools required:

  • 10mm socket/ratchet

  • 11mm socket/ratchet

  • ½ inch ratchet bar

  • Pliers

  • 15mm wrench

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • Telescoping Magnet (optional)

Step 1: Disconnect the vehicle's battery and remove the fan belt.

More information about fan belt removal can be found in one of our other tutorials.

Step 2: Remove the 2 bolts that secure the alternator in place.

There is one bolt on each side of the alternator.

Step 3: Remove the trim cover using 10mm socket.

Step 4: Locate the 10mm bolts that secure the spark-plug bracket and remove it.

You will find this bolt just below the trim cover that you just removed.

Step 5: Remove the red cap on the alternator.

Step 6: Locate and remove the 11mm nut on the back of the alternator.

Once this nut is removed, you can remove the harness attached to the alternator.

Step 7: Remove the other harnesses that are connected to the alternator.

Be sure not to pull directly on the wires, as these harnesses have been exposed to immense heat, therefore they may be a bit delicate. To make the removal easier, use the flathead screwdriver to help release the clips.

Step 8: Remove the hose bracket using the 15mm wrench.

Step 9: You can now fully remove the alternator.

Step 10: Put your new alternator into place and reconnect the electrical harnesses.

Be careful when moving the alternator into place, as there will be some hoses in the way. Simply maneuver the best you can to get it into place.

Step 11: Connect and tighten the connection on the back of the alternator.

Be sure that the connection on the back fits into the slot designated for it.

Step 12: Replace the red cap on the alternator.

Step 13: Replace all of the mounting bolts to secure the alternator in place.

Step 14: Replace and tighten the hose bracket with the 15mm bolt.

Step 15: Replace and tighten the 3 10mm sparkplug bracket bolts.

Step 16: Replace the trim cover.

Step 17: Replace the fan belt.

More information about belt replacement in other resource files.

Step 18: Reconnect the battery.
