NOTE: We'll be dissembling the brake assembly in the process of replacing the hub, so if you need brake pads or new rotors, there's never been an easier time than now, given that everything will be exposed!
Step 1: Lift the vehicle and remove the tire.
Step 2: Remove the caliper/brake pad assembly and rotor.
For more information regarding the brake system, please refer to our other online resources. Secure the caliper to prevent damage to the brake-line, and remove the rotor.
Step 3: Using the pliers, remove the cotter pin and washer.
The cotter pin is located at the center of the hub.
Step 4: Remove the hub nut using the 32mm socket and washer.
If you do not have access to an air ratchet/impact wrench, simply replace the tire, lower the vehicle (keeping your access to the hub nut intact), and use a breaker bar to loosen the hub nut.
Step 5: Using the hammer, and tap the hub. If it moves, you're in great shape!
Step 6: Locate the 6 bolts that keep your axle in place.
When you spin the wheel hub, you should see the 6 bolts and axle spin behind them.
Step 7: Using a crowbar that is threated between the lug nut stems, hold the hub still while you loosen and remove the 6 axle retaining bolts.
Step 8: Remove the axle by tapping on the hub with your hammer and pulling it free.
Step 9: Remove the 3 22mm bolts on the back of the hub.
This may require a breaker bar or pipe for added leverage, as these bolts are exposed to the elements every time you drive!
Step 10: Using a hammer, you can now tap the back of the hub to loosen it. You can now remove it.
NOTE: Before proceeding to the next step, we recommend lubricating the connection point of the hub to ensure that it's easy to slide it into place. Soap will do just fine!
Step 11: Put the new hub in place.
Tighten the 3 retaining bolts to 85 ft. lbs.
Step 12: Turn your wheel to the inside of the vehicle, and reconnect the axle.
Torque the 6 bolts to 60 ft. lbs.
Step 13: Replace the washer and hub nut.
NOTE: Do not fully tighten the hub nut! We'll be torqueing it once the vehicle is lowered.
Step 14: Replace the rotor and brake system.
Step 15: Replace the tire, lower the vehicle, and torque the hub nut to 175 ft. lbs.
Step 16: Replace the cotter pin.
NOTE: Be sure to pump the brakes before road testing the vehicle!
