How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Window Regulator Replacement
Fits years: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004
- 10mm socket/ratchet
- 8mm socket/ratchet
- T25 Torx Driver
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Door Panel Clip Tool (or putty knife)
- Tape ("Painter's tape" recommended)
Step 1: Open the vehicle's door.
Step 2: Pry and remove the screw cover near the side mirror mount, exposing a Phillips screw (1). Loosen and remove this screw.
Step 3: Loosen and remove the Phillips screw (1) inside the interior door pull.
Step 4: Loosen and remove the T25 Torx screw (1) inside the interior door handle.
Step 5: Using the door panel clip tool (or putty knife), pry and separate the interior door panel from the door frame.
A series of retaining clips holds the door panel to the frame. As you pry out (near a clip), you will hear it "pop" as it disengages.
Step 6: You can now remove the interior door panel. Disengage the handle/lock locking rods (2) by disengaging the retaining clips. Also, disconnect the wiring harnesses (2) from the back of the door panel.
Step 7: GENTLY peel back and remove the water shield. Be careful not to tear it!
Step 8: Loosen and remove the Phillips screws (4) that secure the speaker to the door frame. Disconnect the wiring harness (1).
Step 9: Using the pliers, pull and release the retaining clips (2) that secure the window to the regulator. Also, disconnect the window regulator's wiring harness (1).
NOTE: These clips are thin, like a paper-clip, and pull toward the outer edges of the door (HINGE and LATCH sides).
Step 10: Lift the window from the regulator. Using the tape, secure the window in the CLOSED position by taping it over the top of the door frame.
Step 11: Loosen and remove the 8mm bolts (3), and other varying sized bolts (4), that secure the window regulator to the door frame.
These bolts are right in front of you when facing the door frame (with the panel removed, of course).
Step 12: LIFT and slide the track free from its position. You can now remove the window regulator assembly, including the motor.
NOTE: Slide the motor out FIRST, to make it a bit easier.
Step 13: Transfer the window motor from the old regulator assembly to the new one. Move the new regulator into position by sliding it inside the interior door frame.
Be sure that you can access the wiring harness!
Step 14: Move the assembly/motor into position, and secure it by tightening the 8mm bolts (3) and other mounting bolts (4).
Step 15: With the assembly securely in place, you can slide the window down onto the track. Re-engage the retaining clips (2) to secure the window on the track.
Step 16: Connect the regulator's wiring harness (1).
Step 17: Reattach the water shield.
Step 18: To reattach the door panel, reconnect the wiring harnesses (2), and re-engage the retaining clips to reattach the locking rods (2).
Step 19: With a firm "pop" against the door panel near each clip, re-engage the retaining clips and reattach the interior door panel to the door frame.
Step 20: Tighten the T25 Torx screw (1) inside the interior door handle.
Step 21: Tighten the Phillips screw (1) inside the interior door pull.
Step 22: Tighten the Phillips screw (1) near the side mirror mount, and cover the screw with the screw cover plug.
