How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala 3800 Alternator Replacement

Fits years: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005

All Chevrolet Impala Alternator for sale Tools required:

  • 10mm socket/ratchet with extension

  • 13mm socket/ratchet with extension

  • 15mm socket/ratchet with extension

  • 8mm wrench

  • 15mm wrench

Step 1: Open the vehicle's hood.

Step 2: Using the 8mm wrench, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable.

Step 3: Loosen and remove the 13mm bolts (2) that secure the brace across the engine compartment. Remove this brace.

Step 4: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (2) that secure the coolant tank to the vehicle. You can now lift the coolant tank out of your way.

NOTE: You don't have to disconnect the hose, as we only needed to move it out of our way!

Step 5: Remove the oil cap, and pull the engine cover off of the engine.

Step 6: Loosen the 15mm belt tensioner bolt (1) to release tension on the belt. You can now remove the belt from the vehicle.

NOTE: If your belt looks worn or frayed, it's a great time to replace it. After all, we already have it out of the vehicle, so it'll never be easier than it is right now!

Step 7: Disconnect the wiring harness (1) from the BACK of the alternator. Pull back the rubber boot to expose the battery connection. Loosen and remove the 13mm connection bolt (1).

Step 8: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolt (1) that secures the brace to the back of the engine mount.

Step 9: Loosen and remove the 15mm bolt (1) located on TOP of the alternator.

Step 10: Loosen and remove the 15mm mounting bolts (2) that secure the alternator to the engine.

Step 11: Using the flathead screwdriver as a lever, pry and remove the alternator from the vehicle.

Step 12: Mount the new alternator by tightening the 15mm mounting bolts (2).

Step 13: Tighten the 15mm mounting bolt (1) on TOP of the alternator to secure the brace. Secure the other end of the brace by tightening 10mm bolt (1).

Step 14: Tighten the 13mm battery connection bolt (1), and cover it with the rubber boot. Reconnect the wiring harness (1).

Step 15: Route the belt, per the diagram provided near the radiator, and tighten the 15mm tensioner bolt.

NOTE: The belt should be taut, but not overly tight!

Step 16: Attach the engine cover and screw the oil cap back into place.

Step 17: Reattach the engine compartment brace by tightening the 13mm mounting bolts (2).

Step 18: Reattach the coolant reservoir by tightening the 10mm mounting bolts (2).

Step 19: Reconnect the negative battery cable using the 8mm socket/ratchet.
