How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 2003-2012 Volvo XC90 Coolant Overflow Reservoir Replacement

Fits years: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

All Volvo XC90 for sale Tools required:

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • Catch pan (if necessary)


Step 1: Open the vehicle's hood.

Step 2: Lift and remove the power steering fluid reservoir.

Step 3: Lift and remove detach the coolant reservoir from the vehicle.

Step 4: Position the catch pan as best you can (if there is fluid currently in your reservoir), as the next steps will lead to fluid leakage.

Step 5: Using the flathead screwdriver, loosen the clamp (1) on the UNDERSIDE of the reservoir. Slide the hose from the bottom of the reservoir. Fluid will begin to drain, if present.

Step 6: Disconnect the wiring harness (1).

Step 7: Detach the hose from the TOP of the coolant reservoir.

Step 8: The reservoir should now be completely free of the vehicle.

Step 9: To install the new reservoir, attach the hose to the TOP of the reservoir, and slide the tank into place.


Use the tabs on the tank and mount to ensure proper placement.

Step 10: Connect the hose to the UNDERSIDE of the reservoir, and tighten the clamp (1) to secure it.

Step 11: Connect the wiring harness (1).

Step 12: Fill with coolant.


NOTE: If you are going to use the same coolant that you drained from the old reservoir, be sure to filter it before use!
