How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 2004-2012 Chevrolet Colorado Front Door Handle (Exterior) Replacement

Fits Years: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012


Tools required:

  • 10mm socket/ratchet with extension

  • Phillips screwdriver


Step 1: Open the vehicle's door.

Step 2: Loosen and remove the Phillips screws (2) located inside the interior door pull.

Step 3: Lift and remove the window control switch-plate. Disconnect the wiring harnesses (3) from the underside of this switch-plate.

Step 4: Loosen and remove the Phillips screw (1) inside the interior door handle.

Step 5: Pry and remove the interior door handle's bezel.

Step 6: Pry and remove the small trim panel covering the side mirror's mounting area.

Step 7: You can now pry and remove the interior door panel from the door frame.


NOTE: If any retaining clips stayed with the door, pry and remove them. Reattach them to the interior door panel.

Step 8: Disconnect the speaker's wiring harness (1).

Step 9: GENTLY peel back the water shield. Be careful not to tear it, as we'll need to reattach it later!

Step 10: Pry and remove the rubber plug/screw cover.

Step 11: Disengage the retaining clip (1) that secures the locking rod to the back of the exterior door handle.

Step 12: Loosen and remove the 10mm mounting bolts (2) that secure the door handle to the door frame.

Step 13: You can now pull the door handle through the OUTSIDE of the door. Disengage the retaining clip (1) on the back of the handle to fully remove the assembly.

Step 14: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolt (1) that secures the locking cylinder to the door handle. Mount this cylinder to the new door handle.

Step 15: Attach the new door handle to the door by re-engaging the retaining clip (1) on the back of the assembly and tightening the 10mm bolts (2).

Step 16: Re-engage the retaining clip to secure the locking rod to the back of the assembly (inside the door).

Step 17: Reattach the rubber plug/screw cover.

Step 18: Reattach the water shield.

Step 19: To reattach the interior door panel, reconnect the speaker's wiring harness (1), pull the wiring harnesses through the opening in the door, and with a firm "strike", "snap" all of the retaining pins back into place.

Step 20: Reattach the trim panel covering the side mirror's mounting area.

Step 21: Reattach the interior door handle's bezel.

Step 22: Tighten the Phillips screw (1) inside the door handle.

Step 23: Reconnect the wiring harnesses (3) to the underside of the power window switch-plate. Move this panel back into position, and tighten the Phillips screws (2) inside the interior door pull.
