How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 1992-2003 Dodge Dakota, Durango Serpentine Belt Tensioner Replacement

Fits years: 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003

All Dodge Dakota for sale Tools required:
  • 10mm socket/ratchet

  • 10mm wrench
  • 15mm wrench

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Flathead screwdriver

Step 1: Open the vehicle's hood.

Step 2: Using the 15mm wrench, turn the belt tensioner bolt (1) CLOCKWISE to release the tension on the belt. Once the belt is removed, slowly allow the tensioner to return to its resting position.

The tensioner bolt is located just below the alternator.

Step 3: Using the adjustable wrench, loosen and remove the nut that secures the throttle-body cover to the assembly.

Step 4: Release the retaining clips (4) that secure the air box cover to the air box assembly. You can now remove the cover/air intake hose from the vehicle.

Step 5: Remove the air filter from the air box. Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (2) that secure the air box compartment to the vehicle. Release the retaining pin (1) to fully remove the air box.

Step 6: Disconnect the ignition coil's wiring harness. Using the 10mm wrench AND 10mm socket/ratchet, loosen and remove the ignition coil's mounting bolts. You can now remove the ignition coil.

Step 7: Loosen and remove the 15mm bolt (1) that secures the belt tensioner to the assembly.

Step 8: Mount the new belt tensioner by tighten the 15mm mounting bolt (1).

Step 9: Reconnect the ignition coil's wiring harness (1), and mount the coil by tightening the 10mm mounting bolts.

Step 10: Reattach the air box compartment by tighten the 10mm bolts (2) and re-engaging the retaining pin (1).

Step 11: Attach the air box cover/throttle body cover by re-engaging the clips and tightening the bolt on TOP of the throttle body assembly.

Step 12: Using a belt routing diagram, move the serpentine belt into position around the proper pulleys. Once in position, turn the 15mm tensioner bolt (1) COUNTER CLOCKWISE to tighten the belt.

NOTE: The belt should be taut, but not overly tight or stretched.
