How do you Change, Replace, or Install Broken 1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra Front Door Handle (Exterior) Replacement

Fits years: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002

All Chevrolet Silverado for sale Tools required:

  • 7mm socket/ratchet with extension

  • 10mm socket/ratchet with extension

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • Tape (Painter's tape recommended)

Step 1: Open the vehicle's door.

Step 2: Pry and remove the small trim panel that covers the side mirror's mounting area.

Step 3: Pry and lift the window control switch-plate. Disconnect the wiring harnesses (3) attached to the underside of the panel.

Step 4: Pry and remove the locking button from the door panel.

Step 5: Pry and remove the interior door handle's bezel.

Step 6: Loosen and remove the 7mm bolts (2) located beneath the window control plate and interior door pull.

Step 7: You can now lift and remove the interior door panel.

Step 8: Disconnect the seat heater component and speaker harness from the back of the interior door panel. Also, remove the bulb for the door panel's light.

Step 9: GENTLY peel back the water shield. Be careful not to tear it, as we'll need to reattach it later!

Step 10: Tape the window to the TOP of the window/door frame using the Painter's tape.

Step 11: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (2) located inside the openings near each edge of the door frame.

These bolts secure the window to the regulator.

Step 12: Plug the power window control panel into the wiring harness and lower the window regulator.

Step 13: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolt (1) near the speaker. This allows you to remove the "window stop".

Step 14: CAREFULLY detach the window tape, and lower the window down into the door frame.

Step 15: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (3) that secure the window regulator rail in place. Once they are removed, slide the regulator rail toward the HINGE side of the door, allowing access to the door handle assembly.

Step 16: Pry and remove the rubber screw cover near the door handle. Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (3) that secure the exterior door handle to the door.

Step 17: You can now pull the door handle from the EXTERIOR of the door. Disengage the retaining clips (2) that secure the locking rods to the back of the handle.

Step 18: Pry and remove the retaining ring (1) to free the locking cylinder from the OLD handle. Attach this cylinder to the NEW handle assembly.

Step 19: Attach the locking rods to the back of the new door handle by engaging the retaining clips (2). Move the new door handle assembly into position.

Step 20: Tighten the 10mm bolts (3) to secure the handle to the door. Reattach the screw cover.

Step 21: Remount the window regulator rain by tightening the 10mm bolts (3).

Step 22: Slide the window UP completely, and remount the window stop by tightening the 10mm bolt (1).

Step 23: Using the plugged in power window control, raise the window regulator to meet the BOTTOM of the window. Once in place, secure it by tightening the 10mm bolts (2).

Step 24: Reattach the water shield, and disconnect the power window control panel.

Step 25: To reattach the interior door panel, reattach the panel light bulb, seat heater, and speaker harness.

Step 26: Slide the door panel onto the door frame. Tighten the 7mm bolts (2) to secure it.

Step 27: Reconnect the wiring harnesses (3) to the window control switch-plate, and "snap" it back into place.

Step 28: Reattach the locking button.

Step 29: Reattach the small trim panel near the side mirror mount.
