Fits years: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004

All Subaru Outback for sale Tools required:

  • 10mm socket/ratchet

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Flathead screwdriver

Step 1: Open the vehicle's door. Be sure that the window is UP.

Step 2: Pry and remove the retaining pin (1) near the door hinge side of the panel.

Step 3: Pry and remove the triangular trim panel near the side mirror mount.

Step 4: Pry and lift the power window control panel. Disconnect the wiring harnesses (2) from the UNDERSIDE of the panel.

Step 5: Pry and remove the screw cover (1) near the interior door's arm rest. Loosen and remove the Phillips screw (1).

Step 6: Loosen and remove the Phillips screw (1) inside the interior door handle.

Step 7: Pry and remove the interior door handle's bezel.

Step 8: Pry and separate the door panel from the door frame.

A series of retaining clips secures the door panel to the frame. By working your way around the outer edge of the panel, you can "pop" the retaining clips free by prying outward.

Step 9: Disconnect the wiring harness (1) from the back of the interior door panel.

Step 10: The door panel should now be free from the vehicle.

Step 11: GENTLY peel back the water shield. Be careful not to tear it, as we'll need to reattach it later!

Step 12: Disengage the retaining clip (1) that secures the locking rod to the back of the door handle.

Step 13: Loosen and remove the 10mm bolts (2) that secure the handle to the door.

Step 14: Pull the locking cylinder from the BACK of the handle assembly.

Step 15: By lifting on the handle assembly (from the outside), you can pull it from the door. Disengage the retaining clip (1) from the back of the assembly.

Step 16: Move the door handle into position. Engage the retaining clip (1) to the back of the handle. The assembly should snap into position.

Step 17: Tighten the 10mm bolts (2).

Step 18: Engage the locking rod's retaining clip (1).

Step 19: Insert the locking cylinder into the door handle (from the rear).

Step 20: Reattach the water shield.

Step 21: To reattach the interior door panel, connect the wiring harness (1) to the back of the panel, and move it into position.

With a FIRM, but not too firm, strike near each retaining clip, you can "snap" them back into place, securing the panel to the door frame.

Step 22: Reattach the interior door handle's bezel.

Step 23: Reattach the triangular trim panel near the side mirror mount.

Step 24: Tighten the Phillips screws (2).

Step 25: Reattach the retaining pin near the door hinge and the screw cover on the arm rest.

Step 26: Connect the wiring harnesses (2) to the UNDERSIDE of the power window panel. "Snap" the panel back into position.
