Is your BMW running rough, stalling, or showing a check engine light? A failing throttle body assembly could be the culprit. Here's how to tell:
Warning Signs:
- Rough idling or stalling, especially when the engine is cold
- Hesitation or poor acceleration
- Check engine light illuminated
- Reduced engine power
- Surging or fluctuating RPMs
Testing the Throttle Body:
- Visually inspect the throttle body for dirt, carbon buildup, or damage.
- Check the electrical connector for corrosion or loose wires.
- Use a scan tool to check for throttle body-related trouble codes.
- With the engine off, manually move the throttle plate and check for smooth operation. It should not stick or bind.
- If possible, use a multimeter to test the throttle position sensor (TPS) for proper voltage readings.
Common Failure Causes:
- Carbon buildup restricting airflow
- Electrical component failure (TPS, motor)
- Damage from foreign objects
- Wear and tear over time
