Hyundai Tucson headlights started as simple halogen head lamps and now shine with bright LED projectors that earn "A" scores for reach and glare control in 2024-2025 safety tests. A small 2022 recall shows how vital working front lights are: a software glitch could shut off both the head- and tail-lights on a few SUVs. Use this guide to learn which front-lamp assembly fits your year, what bulb type you need, how to aim the beams, and how to keep the lights legal, bright, and earth-friendly.

Overview

The headlight, also called a head lamp or front-lamp assembly, lets you see the road and lets others see you. It houses the low-beam and high-beam bulbs, wiring, fuse, and aiming screws. When even one part fails, night driving gets risky. IIHS tests show that better lamps can cut crash rates after dark.

Bulb Types

  • 2005-2015 low-beam: H7 halogen.
  • 2005-2015 high-beam: 9005 (HB3) halogen.
  • 2016-2021 projector trims: D8S HID or LED module (non-serviceable).
  • 2022-2025 all trims: Integrated LED modules; no separate bulb changes.
Always match the socket or module code in your owner's manual before ordering.

Technology

Modern Tucson lamps add:

  • LED projectors that use less power and send light farther. IIHS found "good" or "acceptable" reach on every 2021-2025 test set.
  • High-beam assist (auto-on high beams) on many trims from 2021 up.
  • Auto-leveling motors on HID setups to keep glare down when the SUV is loaded. Owner's manual notes automatic self-check at start-up.

Common Problems

  1. Condensation behind the lens. Small water mist is normal and clears as you drive; heavy pooling means a bad seal.
  2. Fuse blowouts. Low-beam and high-beam fuses sit in the engine-bay box (check the lid diagram).
  3. Mis-aimed beams. Many owners report factory aim set too low; a #2 Phillips screw behind the lamp lets you raise or lower it.
  4. 2016-2018 wiring wear. Early TL harnesses can chafe near the radiator support, causing intermittent lights. Community fix notes extra loom wrap.

DIY Care

  • Bulb swap (halogen) takes a 10-minute twist-and-pull from behind the housing. Wear gloves so oil from skin does not shorten bulb life.
  • LED module replacement on 2022-2025 lamps requires whole lamp removal-four 10 mm bolts and a wiring plug. Check torque spec in the shop manual before reinstalling.
  • Beam aiming: Park 25 ft (7.6 m) from a wall, mark lamp center, then turn the vertical screw until low-beam cutoff sits at or just below the mark.
A correct beam keeps oncoming drivers safe and meets the 22-inch minimum center height rule in federal code.

Safety Rules

  • U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108 sets photometry, color, and durability rules for all replacement lamp assemblies.
  • Europe and many export markets follow UN Regulation 112 for LED and halogen beam patterns and UN R48 for aim and auto-leveling.
  • Always keep both lamps working; NHTSA can recall vehicles when software kills lamp output, as it did for a handful of 2022 Tucsons.

Upgrades

  • LED retrofit bulbs (for 2005-2015 reflector housings) can deepen night vision, but be sure they have a focused emitter and DOT compliance pouch so light does not scatter.
  • Projector swaps give a sharp cutoff and wider spread; quality hinge mounts ease alignment.
  • Any upgrade must not exceed 2,000 lumens per bulb or the lamp ceases to self-certify under FMVSS 108.

Environment

Halogen and HID bulbs contain glass and small metal parts; fluorescents and HID capsules also carry mercury. The U.S. EPA calls used lamps "universal waste" and urges drop-off at local hazardous-waste centers. LEDs lack mercury but include solder with trace lead; recycling saves valuable metals and keeps toxins out of landfills. Wrap any broken glass in paper before disposal and label the package "waste lamp."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What headlight bulb size fits a 2019 Tucson?
A: Low beam is H7; high beam is 9005 (HB3).

Q: Why do my 2023 Tucson lights seem too low at night?
A: Factory aim can sit low to avoid glare. Raise the vertical adjuster screw behind the lamp until the beam cutoff is just under headlight center at 25 ft.

Q: Are LED modules serviceable on 2022-2025 lamps?
A: No. If an LED fails, you must replace the whole front-lamp assembly because the diode board is sealed inside.

Q: Is it legal to tint or smoke my head-lamp lens?
A: Dark films reduce light output and can violate FMVSS 108 or local laws that demand white or amber forward lighting.

Q: How can I stop moisture inside the lens?
A: Light mist clears on its own. Heavy water means a leak; remove the lamp, dry it, and reseal the rear cap or lens seam with automotive-grade butyl.

Q: My head-lamps quit and the fuse is fine-what else?
A: A known software bug on some 2022 SUVs can shut off lamps; Hyundai issued a recall to reprogram the control unit.

Q: What is the head-lamp fuse number on a 2018 Tucson?
A: Engine-bay fuse box position F14 protects both low beams.

Q: Do brighter bulbs improve safety?
A: IIHS data show higher-rated lamps lower crash risk at night, but beam focus and proper aim matter more than raw brightness.

Q: How do I dispose of an old HID capsule?
A: Treat it as hazardous waste; store it in a sealed box and take it to a collection site that handles mercury bulbs.

By understanding bulb sizes, rules, and care, you can keep every Hyundai Tucson head-light-whether halogen, HID, or LED-shining safely and legally for years to come.
