Warning Signs of a Failing Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Check Engine Light is on
- Engine stalls or hesitates
- Poor fuel economy
- Engine misfires
- Difficulty starting the vehicle
- Transmission shifting problems
- Failed emissions test
Testing the ECM
Is it the ECM or something else? Here's how to check:
- Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious damage to the ECM, like corrosion or burnt components.
- Scan for Codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the ECM. Note: other faulty components can trigger ECM-related codes.
- Check Power and Ground: Make sure the ECM is receiving proper power and ground. A multimeter can help with this.
- Inspect Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness and connectors for any damage or loose connections.
- Component Testing: Other components like sensors and actuators should be tested before condemning the ECM.
Common Failure Causes
- Overheating
- Voltage spikes
- Water damage
- Vibration
- Age and wear
