Overview

The tail light assembly-sometimes called a tail lamp, rear light cluster, stop-lamp housing or back-lamp-has a red lens for the running/stop/turn functions and a clear window for the white reverse lamp. It mounts to the sheet-metal from inside the trunk and plugs into the body wiring harness with one multi-pin connector. (CarCareKiosk, YouTube)

Fitment Years

  • Fits all 2007, 2008 and 2009 Aura XE, XR and Green Line trims; the 2010 fleet-only Aura uses the same lamp. (NHTSA)
  • The sedan's design means left (driver) and right (passenger) housings are mirror images, so order the correct side. (CarCareKiosk)

Known Issues

  • Socket heat damage - Loose bulbs raise resistance and can melt the plastic socket or lens. (Reddit)
  • Moisture in housing - A worn foam gasket lets rain in, leaving condensation or standing water. A bead of clear silicone around the lens seam is a common DIY fix. (Reddit)
  • Trunk water leaks - Water entering through tail-lamp studs can pool in the spare-tire well; replacing the gasket cures it. (Saturn Forum)

Recall Notes

GM recall 14V-252 / campaign 13036 addresses a body-control-module (BCM) connection problem that can make the Aura's brake lamps stay on or fail to light at all. Dealers reposition and secure the BCM harness, add dielectric grease and install new tie-straps-all at no cost. (NHTSA, NHTSA, NHTSA)
Owners can read the official bulletin (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2014/RCRIT-14V252-3751P.pdf) or check their VIN on the NHTSA site (https://www.nhtsa.gov).:contentReference[oaicite:10]{index=10}

DIY Install

  1. Open the trunk and pull back the felt liner behind the lamp. (CarCareKiosk)
  2. Remove the two 10 mm plastic nuts (or wing-nuts on some cars) that hold the housing.
  3. Slide the assembly straight back; avoid scratching the bumper cover.
  4. Twist each bulb socket a quarter-turn to free it, then unplug the harness.
  5. Reverse steps to install the new tail light; snug the nuts-do not overtighten, or the lens may crack. (YouTube)

Wiring Info

  • The tail-lamp harness routes to a 10-amp fuse marked "RT TURN" and a 10-amp fuse marked "LT TURN" in the rear compartment fuse block, driver-side trunk panel. (Fuse Box)
  • Trailer-wiring kits use a plug-and-play Y-harness that snaps into the driver-side tail-lamp connector; the converter module mounts below the lamp with supplied tape. (O'Reilly Auto Parts)
  • GM bulletin 16188 shows how the BCM harness should be tied down after the recall repair to prevent future brake-lamp faults. (NHTSA)

Upgrades

LED replacement bulbs in the 3157 and 921 families give faster illumination, brighter light, lower current draw and a crisper appearance. A load resistor or an LED-ready flasher may be needed to prevent rapid-flash turn signals. (SEALIGHT, AutoZone.com)
Some owners choose smoked film over the lens; be sure light output still meets state law.

Care Tips

  • Wash the lens with mild car-wash soap-no harsh chemicals.
  • Check tail-lamps during every fuel stop; ask a friend to press the brake pedal.
  • Keep spare 3157 bulbs and a 10-mm socket in the spare-tire kit for roadside fixes. (CarCareKiosk)

Every U.S. state follows Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, which requires red tail lights visible at 1,000 ft and white reverse lamps. A burned-out rear lamp can earn a traffic citation. (NHTSA)

Disposal

Halogen bulbs contain pressurized gas-wrap them in newspaper before trashing. Most counties accept automotive bulbs at household-hazardous-waste drop-offs. Recycle cracked plastic housings with #7 mixed plastics where accepted.
