Is your car acting strange? A bad Communication Control Module (CCM) can cause a lot of problems. Here's how to tell if yours might be failing:
- Warning Lights: Keep an eye out for warning lights on your dashboard, especially related to the anti-theft system, security, or communication systems.
- Starting Problems: Your car might not start, or it might stall shortly after starting.
- Electrical Issues: You might see problems with your power windows, door locks, radio, or other electrical components.
- Strange Messages: The Driver Information Center (DIC) could display odd or incorrect messages.
How do you know it's the CCM and not something else?
- Check the Basics: Make sure your battery is good and all connections are clean and tight. A weak battery can cause all sorts of electrical problems.
- Scan for Codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Codes related to communication errors or the CCM itself are a big clue.
- Inspect Wiring: Look for damaged or corroded wires and connectors around the CCM.
- Test with a Multimeter: A mechanic can use a multimeter to check the CCM's power and ground connections.
What causes these modules to fail?
- Water Damage: Moisture can get into the module and cause corrosion.
- Electrical Surges: Power surges can fry the internal components.
- Vibration: Over time, vibration can damage the module's connections.
- Age: Like any electronic component, CCMs can simply wear out over time.
